By Bobby Holt

Peyton Manning still refuses to lose, no matter how bad his defense is. Despite his 2 ints, he still put together a solid day.

I have finally found a quarterback who is better at throwing to the other team then Mark Sanchez, his name? Jake Delhomme. Even Kerry Rhodes joined in the fun picking off two, yeah, count it two interceptions on the day. First two of this year.

Stat of the week: Darelle Revis and Kerry Rhodes both caught more passes from Jake Delhomme than Steve Smith did. You know, the guy on his team.

Steve Smith, who? (the good one). Revis blanketed him all day making him a non factor in the 17-6 loss to the Jets.

Washington almost won another game! Then decided to blow the lead and allow the Eagles to kick the game winning FG with under a minute to play.

The Falcons pulled off what looked like a sure fire loss when Matt Ryan and Michael Turner both left the game very early in the first. Chris Redmen, who was selling insurance last year, led the Falcons on the game winning drive with less than 2 minutes to play. After stumbling at the 5 yard line for three plays, Redmen threw a strike to Roddy White on 4th down with only 14 seconds left to play in the game.

This just in, Jason Elam still can’t kick a field goal.

Seattle did everything in their power to remind everyone they still play football. They beat a Bulger-less team and kept themselves in the playoff hunt.

Chad Henne did his best Chad Pennington impression by throwing pick after pick to help the Bills crush the ‘Fins 31-14.

LOL Oakland Raiders LOL.

Why does Detroit still get to play on Thanksgiving? The only thanks I gave was when the game ended.

The Bengals quietly beat a terrible Browns team and Larry Johnson rushed for over 100 yards. What was even more impressive was that Johnson didn’t make a racial slur before/during or after the game*.

****This has not been verified.

We have learned that the Giants can beat the teams they are supposed to, but can’t even beat the Broncos.

Stayed tuned for the late game wrap up.

There are some things you just can’t make up. They seem to be too good to be true, but this, is not. When asked about his dismal performance against the San Diego Chargers in week 8, Russel responded that he was “pleased with his play.” Pleased? Maybe if Ray Charles was in the backfield taking snaps and only completed 12 passes I would be pleased. That would be pretty impressive since he is blind and all.

If I was Russel, I would not only be disappointed , but I would be looking to see if the water boy position is open. He completed barely 50% of his passes and threw for 109 yards. If I suited up, I could easily do the same, without costing the Raiders 50 million dollars mind you. To add to his already stellar day, by Russel’s standards, he also fumbled, threw a pick and was sacked five times. Clearly one of his better career starts. Not only is Russel bad, he is ranked 33rd in QB rating. Let me repeat that, 33rd. Yeah, that is out of 32 teams. He is so bad, that he is worse than a backup on another team.

If Oakland ever wants to start winning again, they have to either figure out a way to get rid of Al Davis (or get him another gig as the crypt keeper. Seriously, he is like 103 years old.) and get rid of Russel. He is an overweight, untalented excuse for a QB. Sure he can throw a football to the moon, but I bet if he was five feet from it he couldn’t hit it. The bottom line is that someone has to talk some sense into the kid because drawing comparisons to Ryan Leaf is never a good thing.

In many fantasy football leagues, the top 5 picks are almost always entirely comprised of running backs and if you are not prepared for your draft, this could make or break your team.

Below are my top fantasy football running backs and all necessary handcuffs. (Pro-tip: The term “handcuff” relates to drafting your feature back’s, back-up. For example, last year Adrian Peterson’s “handcuff” was Chester Taylor because if A.P. got hurt, Taylor would be getting the majority of all carries. Not every running back has a handcuff however, it relates directly to the ability of the offensive line and the back himself. )

1. Adrian Peterson, Min

After leading the league in rushing in 2008, Adrian “All Day” Peterson is without a doubt, the best running back in football. The Minnesota Vikings also boaster an incredible offensive line which gives A.P. lanes to run through. The only downfall to this superstar is his nagging injury problems that go back to college. This pick should be a no-brainer and made every time.

Handcuff: Chester Taylor

2. Michael Turner, ATL

He spent several seasons as ” LT’s back-up” however, last year he proved that he is one of the best running backs in the NFL. His strong, in your face, smash mouth style of running has defensive backs and even linebackers cowering in fear.

Michael “Burner” Turner was only one yard shy of a 1,700 yard season and pounded his way to 17 TDs. Now that teams are aware that the Falcons and Matt Ryan can beat them through the air, opposing teams can no longer stack 8 in the box to try and stuff the run. Look for Turner to continue his progression into superstardom this year.

Handcuff: Jerious Norwood

3. Matt Forte, CHI

Going into preseason, Matt Forte has been a popular and almost unanimous pick as the third best running back in fantasy football. Last season, he was barely projected to start and would only get touches behind Cedric Benson. A year later and things have certainly changed. Forte rushed for 1,238 yards and recorded 12 total TDs. Those may not seem like amazing numbers for the number 3 back however, Forte is a PPR (point per reception) monster. He caught 63 balls for 477 yards while only playing the last half of the season as the feature back. With the additions of Jay Cutler and Orlando Pace look for Forte to have an excellent season.

4. Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX

For the first time in his career, Jones-Drew, will be the feature back for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has never eclipsed the 200 carries mark but, has been able to score 38 TDs in his first three seasons. With Fred Taylor out of the picture, Jones-Drew will be getting 300 carries and a chance to prove himself as one of the elite backs in the NFL. Like Forte, Jones-Drew is aPPR stud who hauled in 62 passes last year. With the addition of Eugune Monroe and Eben Britton, the Jaguars offensive line is extremely deep, something that has been lacking for a while. Look for Jones-Drew to have a break out season in 2009.

5. Brian Westbrook, PHI

If there has been one thing that has plagued Brian Westbrook’s career, it would be injuries. He has not played a full 16 games in his entire NFL existence. That’s not to say he isn’t tough. He is an extremely gifted athlete who excels at all aspects of the game. In 14 games last year, he missed the 1,000 yard mark but, accumulated over 1,300 total yards. Westbrook is also extremely dangerous in the passing game which makes him a threat to score anytime he is on the field. In 2007, he recorded 90 catches for 771 yards. He added 1,300 yards rushing to finish with a staggering 2,000 all-purpose yards.

Despite preseason surgery and a questionable start for week 1, Westbrook will still put up huge numbers and be an excellent fantasy option.

Handcuff: LeSean McCoy

6. DeAngelo Williams, CAR

Last season, Williams, was battling for his position against then rookie, Jonathan Stewart. Heading into week 1, it appeared as though Stewart would get the start and thus become the feature running back. However, Williams obviously had other ideas. He rushed for 1,500 yards and an amazing 18 TDs all while splitting carries.

This year, Carolina is still going to split carries between Williams and Stewart equally making it difficult for Williams to reach last seasons total. Despite the running back by committee, Williams will still have a great season and put up solid fantasy numbers.

Handcuff: Jonathan Stewart.

7. LaDainian Tomlinson, SD

Former fantasy football MVP, Tomlinson had a season to forget last year barely reaching the 1,000 yard mark and having a paltry 3.8 yards per carry. With Darren Sproles looming large in many people’s minds, LT could drop a few draft spots due to his production in 2008. However, this should be a blessing, not a curse. Coming into last year, LT was still not 100% and a shell of his former self. Now this year, he is fully healthy and ready to regain his greatness. Look for LT to hit 1,500 yards and at least 8 TD’s. Don’t forget that he is still PPR beast who can at anytime rattle off a pair of 60+ yards receptions, just like he did multiple times in 2007.

Handcuff: Darren Sproles

8. Chris Johnson, TEN

One of the fastest players in the entire league, Chris Johnson, exploded onto the fantasy football scene last year as a rookie. He recorded 1,228 rushing yards and 9 TDs. All of this was while sharing time with one of the NFL’s most notorious touchdown vultures, LenDale White. Despite White scoring 15 TDs, he has never been liked by the coaches and had a falling out at the end of the season. This could give Johnson the edge and majority of the carries to push him into an elite category with Turner and Peterson.

Johnson predicted he will rush for 1,500 yards and 15 TDs and then over 600 yards receiving with another 6 TDs. Even if he would come close, those would be huge numbers. It will interesting to see if Johnson can eclipse his prediction and become one of the NFL’s best running back.

Handcuff: LenDale White

9. Brandon Jacobs, NYG

Brandon Jacobs is a human bowling ball who knocks down anything in his path, which usually results in pain for opposing players. He stands 6 foot 4 and 264 lbs. Those are the types of numbers you expect on a slow moving linebacker. However, Jacobs is not slow and is usually putting the hurt on LBs and DBs trying to tackle him.

When looking at his numbers you would assume there are no flaws, you would be right, statistically. However, Jacobs has huge durability issues that kept him out of 3 games completely and limited him in 2 others last year. If he could reach the 300 carry mark, his numbers would be astronomical. Look for Jacobs to score at least 12 TDs and add at least 1,400 yards, assuming he stays healthy.

Handcuff: Ahmad Bradshaw

10. Frank Gore, SF

If there is going to be one running back in this list that gets the most touches, it will be Frank Gore. He can do it all; run the ball, catch the ball and even throw the ball, sometimes. However, like everyone one of these offensive juggernauts he has injury issues. He has only played a full 16 games once in his career and yet , he still manages to surpass the 1,100 yard mark every year.

In an extremely offensive scheme like the 49ers, Gore is the feature. They want to get him the ball as many times as possible and it shows. The last 3 seasons Gore has accumulated almost 1,000 all purpose touches. Look for Gore to get about 310 total touches this year and finish with 1,600 all purpose yards and 12 TDs.

Handcuff: Michael Robinson

Best of the Rest:

11. Steven Jackson, STL- Despite his young offensive line and lack of a solid passing game, Jackson is still an excellent running back who has the ability to run both inside and outside the tackles. One thing that he has, that many other running backs don’t have, is great hands. He is a PPR stud and could catch at least 60 passes this year.

12. Steve Slaton, Hou-He is now the feature back in a very formidable Houston offense, which means he will put up very good numbers. Defenses will not be able to stack the box because of Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub. Just like Jackson, Slaton is a very good pass catcher. Houston will score a lot of points this year and many will come from Slaton.

13. Marion Barber, DAL-Even with Felix Jones taking carries away, Barber proved that he can carry the load. He is a TD monster and that justifies his place on the list.

14. Clinton Portis, WAS- Losing carries and no longer the 3rd down back.

15. Pierre Thomas, NO- will get more carries this year and is the goaline back.

16. Reggie Bush, NO-Coming off an injury plagued season, but is healthy now. He will catch a ton of passes and is a good bid to score at least 12 TDs.

17. Ronnie Brown, MIA-Many teams are now figuring out how to play against the Wildcat offense, look for a slight decrease in yards and TDs because of it.

18. Thomas Jones, NYJ-Last season’s AFC leading rusher is coming into 2009 with a new quarterback at the helm and will lose carries to Leon Washington. The Jets will run the ball more than ever so there shouldn’t be a huge drop off in production.

19. Ryan Grant, GB-He is a big punishing back and in a very pass first offense in Green Bay he won’t put the same production as other bruisers in the league. Look for about 1,100 yards about 6-8 TDs.

20. Kevin Smith, DET-There are two players on the Lions you want to own in fantasy football one being Calvin Johnson and the other being Kevin Smith. The Lions will run the ball a lot, but you have to worry that if they start to trail early, will they go to the air thus reducing Smith’s carries.

21. Willie Parker, PIT-Finally healthy and ready to produce. He will be sharing carries with Mendenhall, who will be a TD vulture, but Parker has good hands out of the backfield and should still put up solid numbers.

22. Leon Washington, NYJ-One of the most dynamic players in the league, Washington averaged over 6 yards per carry last year and had the most all purpose yards in the AFC. He is a huge threat in the passing game and was a Pro-Bowl kick returner last year. Look for his numbers to increase and become a very viable flex player.

23. Darren McFadden, OAK-As long as he stays healthy, he could be poised for a break out season.

24. Larry Johnson, KC-He says he is happy, but Kansas City has a terrible offensive line, which would make anyone upset. Look for him to have a very up and down season. Play him against weak defenses only.

25. Marshawn Lynch, BUF- Suspended the first three games of the seasons and will lose carries to Fred Jackson.

26. Derrick Ward, TB-Will split carries with Ernest Graham as his first year in Tampa’s new offense. They will run the ball a lot so he will get a chance to put up decent numbers.

27. Chris “Beanie” Wells, ARI- Last season, Arizona had one of the best passing offenses in football and with the secondary being stretched out by Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, look for Wells to put up a big numbers, assuming he wins the job from Tim Hightower.

28. Ray Rice, BAL- They will run the ball early and often to keep pressure off of Flacco.

29. Julius Jones, SEA-Not an excellent choice, especially with the recent signing of James. Look elsewhere on draft day.

30. Jerious Norwood, ATL- Will get more carries this year and always a threat to score.

31. Jamal Lewis, CLE- Leave him on draft day.

32. Knowshon Moreno, DEN- The backfield in Denver is extremely packed and with the loss of Cutler, they don’t have a lot going for them.

33. Sammy Morris, NE- Fantasy sleeper, Sammy Morris, could be had very late in most drafts due to the other talent in the backfield.

34. Felix Jones, DAL- More carries and he is a similar player to Norwood and Washginton.

35. Rashard Mendenhall, PIT- As long as Ray Lewis doesn’t break him in half again this year, he could be more than just a handcuff.

Throughout the next few weeks, I will be breaking down each position and giving out my guide to help you win your fantasy league. This time, we start with quarterbacks.

Edited on 8/2/09

1. Drew Brees, New Orleans

It is no secret that the Saints love to throw the football, with weapons like Reggie Bush, Marques Colston and the emergence of Lance Moore, who wouldn’t.

Drew Brees will continue to put up big numbers throughout the season. Which makes him the number one quarterback on the list.

2. Tom Brady, New England

Tom Brady could be the best quarterback in all of the National Football League. He is surrounded by Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Lawrence Maroney and with the editions of Joey Galloway and Fred Taylor, he will only get better.

One thing to keep an eye on is his ability to bounce back from the torn ACL he suffered last season. If he is able to play at anywhere near 100%, he will put up big numbers.

3. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis

It’s Peyton Manning, he is always one of the top quarterbacks at the end of the season and that warrants him the number three spot on the list.

Reggie Wayne could be one of the best wide receivers in the game, which gives Manning an excellent target to throw to. Combined with Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark, he will have plenty of weapons to help him get the job done.

4. Kurt Warner, Arizona

There are two reasons that Kurt Warner will have a great season, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. The Cardinals have the best wide receiver duo in football.

As long as Warner cuts down on turnovers, look for him to be a solid option that could be had at a reasonable price.

5. Tony Romo, Dallas

Going into the 2009 season, Dallas have many question marks surrounding the wide receiver position. With the loss of Terrell Owens, Romo is lacking a reliable target to throw the ball to. Of course, Jason Witten, who is one of the best tight ends in the NFL, is one option. However, the deciding factor to Romo’s success will rely on Miles Austin and Patrick Crayton. If they are unable to step up, it could be a long season for Romo and the ‘Boys.

6. Philip Rivers, San Diego

Last season, Rivers threw for over 4,000 yards and over 30 touchdowns. All of which came without a consistent running game. If LT bounces back, look for Rivers to have more chances to spread the field with defensives stacking the box.

With Antonio Gates, LT, Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson, look for Rivers to continue his production into next season.

7. Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia

Even without a solid set of wide receivers, McNabb has always managed to put up points. Last season he just missed the 4,000 yard mark by 84 yards. His 23 touchdowns to 11 interceptions is not the best ratio at 2:1 but, with the lack of talent around him, he certainly made it work.

If DeSean Jackson matures, he could give McNabb the deep threat he needs. Jackson and Kevin Curtis, combined with one of the best pass catching running backs in Brian Westbrook, give the Eagles a solid offense that will give McNabb a chance to put up big numbers.

8. Jay Cutler, Chicago

Cutler has one of the best arms in all of football, but he now finds himself in Chicago without his safety blanket in Brandon Marshall. He lost Marshall, but he did gain a very solid running back in Matt Forte and a great defense backing him up.

Since Cutler was traded to the Bears in the off-season, his value dropped. His best wide receiver is now Devin Hester, who has the speed, but has not quite made the full transition from defensive back. This season will prove how good of a QB Cutler really is.

9. Matt Ryan, Atlanta

Matt Ryan is coming off an impressive rookie campaign and looks to repeat his solid numbers. He has arguably the best running back in football, in Michael “Burner” Turner behind him. However, Turner is both a blessing and a curse. He takes away an annoying amount of touchdowns from Ryan when the ball is within the ten yard line. But, he is able to set up the play action extremely well and opens the defensive up very well.

On the heel’s of Roddy White’s Pro Bowl season, the Falcon’s added another Pro Bowler to their roster. Tony Gonzalez, a sure Hall of Famer, joins Atlanta’s already potent offense. If Ryan can avoid the sophomore slump, he will have an outstanding season.

Best of the rest:

10. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay- He has Greg Jennings, Donald Lee and Donald Driver. He will do fine.

11. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati- Coming off an injury plagued season, Palmer looks to regain his almost MVP numbers of previous seasons. Chad Johnson OchoCinco vows to have a career year and it will all rest on Palmer’s shoulders if he will get that. I think he regains his top 10 quarterback status this season while cutting down on the interceptions.

12. Matt Schaub, Houston- Entering his second full season as the Texans starting quarterback, there are two reasons that he will have a good season. Andre Johnson and Steve Slaton. He also has Owen Daniels just incase those two weren’t enough to persuade you. He is an excellent tier two quarterback who could be had for a bargain and could put up numbers similar to a low end tier one.

13. Eli Manning, New York Giants- His numbers all depend on two things. If Brandon Jacobs can stay healthy and if one of the Giants’ many wide receivers can step up and perform. As it stands now, Hixon and Smith are the starting wide receivers. Hardly as impressive as Plaxico Buress and Amani Toomer. If the wide outs step up, Manning will have a good year.

14. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh- Hines Ward, Willie Parker, Heath Miller and Santonio Holmes are just a few of his weapons. If he can get past his current legal troubles, he will have a steady season.

15. Trent Edwards, Buffalo-Will the addition of Terrell Owens, Edwards has no shortage of talent surrounding him. Lee Evans and Marshawn Lynch are just two more reasons why Edwards could be a viable option if you miss out on a big name quarterback.

16. Matt Cassel, Kansas City- Probably the most interesting situation heading into the season will be how does Matt Cassel handle leaving the Patriots and their offensive system. He leaves an experienced and talented offensive line to go to Kansas City who is just trying piece a line together. Cassel won’t reach last seasons numbers, but he will be reasonably close.

17. Chad Pennington, Miami- Only if you missed out on the first two tiers do you take him. Sure Ted Ginn Jr. is a viable wide reciever, but as it stands Miami is a run first, pass second team. Until that changes, stay away.

18. Joe Flacco, Baltimore- Depending on how much of the offense they open up to him in his second season, Flacco could move up in this list. Derrick Mason is now un-retiring and will be returning to the Ravens to be their number one wide out once again. I project Flacco to finish in the top 15 of all quarterbacks if Baltimore relies more on the pass this year and allows the former Delaware product to display his skills.

19. Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle-Even with the recent signing of T.J. Houshyourmoma, Hasselbeck will not put up numbers like he did 2 or 3 years ago. There are other options available as he will probably fall into the 10th round.

20. Jason Campbell, Washington- The former Auburn product was unhappy this year when his team tried to acquire Jay Cutler. Look for Campbell to try to prove his worth and have one of his best seasons of his career.

21. Jake Delhomme, Carolina-He threw way too many interceptions last year, but he does have Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. He isn’t completely worthless.

22. Marc Bulger, St. Louis- No longer the Marc Bulger of yesteryear and he should be drafted as so. Also, for the first time in many years, Torry Holt will not be part of his wide receiver core, leaving that position to Donny Avery. With a brittle offensive line, Bulger will not have a lot of time to get the ball off and will struggle most of the year.

23. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets- His only obstacle is Kellen Clemens who he is currently battling for the starting quarterback position. With a pure possession receiver like Jericho Cotchery and tight end Dustin Keller, Sanchez has plenty of options to go along with his own personal skill set.

24. David Garrard, Jacksonville- At the moment, David Garrard is third tier quarterback who really should not be owned in many leagues. The Jaguars are built to run the football and because of that Garrard will not put up many fantasy points.

25. Tavaras Jackson, Minnesota-As long as he has Adrian Peterson, that is the only weapon he needs.

26. Kyle Orton, Denver- Going to be an interesting transition from Devin Hester to now having a viable WR threat in Brandon Marshall.

27. Kerry Collins, Tennessee-His WR depth isn’t quite there yet, but he does have Chris Johnson which provides an excellent running game. His offensive line is solid so he should have time in the pocket. Tennessee may not pass the ball often unless they are behind. Vince Young does not appear to be breathing down his neck yet, but if he has a few lackluster starts, the Titans may look at a change.

28. Shaun Hill, San Francisco-He is going to have to throw often, not only due to the offensive system, but since SF is probably going to be trailing, a lot. A lot of his value depends on Frank Gore, since he is their most valuable player. Not a bad choice since he could has nice upside per his position drafted.

29. Brady Quinn, Cleveland- Going into training camp, Quinn is not guaranteed the starting position, however I think he is the future of the franchise and he can’t do much worse than he did last year.

30. JaMarcus Russell, Oakland- Not really a suitable fantasy option at this time, of course he has Darren McFadden, but he doesn’t complete enough passes to be owned in many leagues.

31. Matt Stafford, Detroit- As of now, it appears as though Daunte Culpepper is going to be the opening day starter, but Stafford could win the job outright in camp. Both quarterbacks should not be owned despite Calvin Johnson being a top ten wide receiver.

32. Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay- May not get the start immediately, still shouldn’t be owned.

Up next: Running Back Edition

Special thanks to Steve Gosman for getting past his love of Matt Ryan and helping me make an acceptable list.

With the first pick in the NFL draft the Detroit Lions will select quarterback, Matthew Stafford. They locked up Stafford last night with almost forty million dollars guaranteed.

An interesting theme that will play throughout the first day will be the role of Mark Sanchez. Starting in March and continuing through April, Sanchez has flown up draft boards on many teams. It will be a possibility that many teams will attempt to trade into the top five, just to have a chance to draft the USC quarterback.

Many experts believe Sanchez will go as early as fourth to the Seattle Seahawks, since the signing of T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the off-season eliminated the need for a WR.

With the NFL draft looming in the not so distant future, teams throughout the league are struggling to find stop gaps and missing pieces to their super bowl puzzle. One prized piece of seemingly everyone’s puzzle, is quarterback Jay Cutler. Just when the Cutler saga seemed to end, two days ago Broncos’ brass announced that Cutler will be traded.

The Vanderbilt graduate has been of hot topic the past week with seemingly half the National Football League after him. In a surprise move the Washington Redskins reportedly agreed to trade Jason Campbell to an undisclosed team for a second round pick, as of now, the trade is off the table. This agreement almost certainly hinged on the Redskins’ ability to acquire Cutler. The Redskins are only one of six teams that have jumped out ahead in the race for the strong armed right hander. The New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears round out the front runners for the Pro Bowler.

Since almost half the league wants him, it will take time before a decision will be made. The Broncos plan to listen to every possible offer on the table and potentially delay until draft day if the offer is not up to par. Only time will tell where he will land, but it will probably be weeks before the dust has cleared and Cutler is in his new home.
